2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Teased, Confirming Multi-Flex Tailgate

Of all of the features found on a modern pickup truck, the tailgate may be the one remaining look at the simple vehicles trucks once were. The gravity-operated drop-down gate has been a fixture of the pickup truck since their earliest days, however that appears to be changing. General Motors has just given us a small teaser for the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and they’ve confirmed the truck will be receiving a new Multi-Flex tailgate.

Essentially the Multi-Pro tailgate from the GMC Sierra with a new name, the Multi-Flex tailgate brings six unique functional configurations to the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500. This is no surprise, as a Silverado was already spotted driving around with the feature. Knowing that business gets done around the rear of a pickup, GM has incorporated a sort of mini tailgate that drops down to serve as a quick desk. The Multi-Flex tailgate is also designed with ease of loading in mind, and can fold in various ways to accommodate different types of loads. You can even fold the whole tailgate into a staircase of sorts, which allows you to easily step into the load floor of the bed.

The announcement came via Twitter, where the General has posted a video of the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country rocking a Multi-Flex tailgate. Chevrolet was clear to state that while the option is expected to be available for the 2021 model year, they don’t expect that customers will receive these trucks until early next year. They also haven’t released any pricing information at this time, but we can expect that to change on September 21 when we learn more about the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado.

With the introduction of yet another fancy tailgate, we continue to see automakers try and find ways to refine the pickup truck formula. Whether or not buyers will be willing to fork over extra cash for the Multi-Flex tailgate in droves will have to be seen. Regardless, it makes you wonder what was so bad about a normal tailgate.
