Courtesy Andrew DanaIt’s pink, it’s teal, and it’s on wheels. Next week, Call Your Mother will debut a bagelmobile twice the size of a typical food truck. “It’s one of the old trollies that used to tour the city, but it’s no longer orange and green,” says co-owner Andrew Dana.
It’s equipped with a full kitchen for toasting the growing local company’s signature bagels and building them into breakfast sandwiches. In addition to Call Your Mother’s regular menu, the trolley will offer hot drip coffee and iced coffee. Given the unique set up, espresso drinks aren’t available.
For an indefinite period of time, the Call Your Mother bagel trolley will post up in a parking lot next to Suburban Hospital (8600 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda), near where the Bethesda Community Store used to operate. Food trucks have frequently sold from the lot.
“We are going to do some test runs next week where we’re making bagels and giving them to employees at Suburban,” Dana says. “Once things are smooth as butter, we’re going to open.” Watch Call Your Mother’s social media channels for updates.
One advantage of the trolley is that it will allow Call Your Mother to test drive demand. They can park in neighborhoods where they’re considering opening a brick-and-mortar shop to see how their bagels are received. There are already locations in Park View and on Capitol Hill, and a Georgetown outpost is coming soon.
“We like the idea of opening new shops,” Dana says. “We like being able to promote from within. We have talented people and to give them opportunities to grow, we have to continue expanding.”
The bagel trolley may eventually be available for events like weddings for people who really love bagels. Because of its versatility, Dana calls his latest venture “the Swiss army knife of bagel shops.”
