The COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t good news for the initial planned opening of Aurora’s first pot joint but the cannabis store will now begin welcoming customers in September.

Jane’s Cannabis Shop, at 160 Wellington St., at Industrial Parkway, will hold its grand opening Sept. 12.

The store was first scheduled to open on April 20, also known as 4/20, which is National Weed Day and also the birthday of Jane Willson, the store’s namesake and its creative director.

But plans had to be pushed back due to the pandemic.

Owner, Grant Willson, is breathing a sigh of relief the shop is finally ready to open.

”It’s been a long haul and I must admit that I wondered if this dream would ever happen. I’m sure most would agree that COVID put a wrench in the best laid plans,” he said.

“Our building process was delayed (and) we faced uncertainty as to whether the pre-COVID store design was relevant. Not only that but suppliers and trades experienced shortages and delays caused by the pandemic. We persevered and are happy to say that the opening day is upon us.”

Jane Willson is also looking forward to opening.

“Everything is good to go,” she said.

“We are so happy to have had such positive experiences with the businesses of Aurora. And now we are ready to welcome and meet the community in our beautiful new store.”

Jane is an artist and put her skills to work by painting reproductions for the shop.

“I have always respected and followed 20th century art and literature,” she said.

“I am particularly fond of the surrealists, particularly Rene Magritte. One of my favourite Rene Magritte quotes is ‘The mind loves the unknown.’ I hope to pique the curiosity of our customers.”

Jane’s design was also influenced by Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll.

“What a fun, crazy novel supposedly written for children. Who doesn’t love a Mad Hatter party?” she said.

While the pandemic has toned down initial plans for a big party, the official opening will observe COVID-19 protocols while offering a disc jockey, a food truck, a contest, selected items on sale and free swag.

The event will run Sept. 12 beginning at 10 a.m.
