LE MARS — The rumors of a new convenience store coming to Le Mars have been confirmed.

KwikStar, a parent company of Wisconsin-based KwikTrip, has announced its plans to build one of their 9,100-square-foot neighborhood grocery/c-stores in Le Mars.

Wade Dumond, real estate development manager for KwikTrip, said they have the community’s current truck stop, J&J Cafe, under contract.

“We are hoping to present plans to the city sometime in August and get their approval so we can close,” Dumond said.

The store, which will be similar to the Spirit Lake and Worthington, Minnesota sites, will feature an wide array of food commodities, a small seating area, an in-house bakery and kitchen with carry and go options. The site will also feature a single bay automatic car wash, a fuel island, a small diesel presence with two fueling positions, and a few truck stalls.

“I’ve been looking in Le Mars for the past three years,” Dumond said. “I think it’s a great community. We like to be a participant in the community and based on what we have seen in Le Mars we felt it will be a great fit.”

Dumond said the current site at 321 Fifth Ave. S.W. will be demolished and construction of the new store will begin in 2021.

On average KwikStar stores employ between 25-35 full-time and part-time staff members.

The family-owned company is based in La Crosse, Wisconsin and is home to more than 25,000 co-workers. The company has more than 700 stores across Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. In Wisconsin and Minnesota, Dumond said their stores are known as KwikTrip, while in Iowa they are known as KwikStar, so they don’t get confused with another competitor.
