McCarthy Tire Service to close Kingston store

McCarthy Tire Service is closing its store at 520 Pierce St., Kingston and its retail operations will merge into the company’s flagship store at 340 Kidder St., Wilkes-Barre.

The move is effective Oct. 5, McCarthy Tire Service announced.

In a news release, McCarthy Tire Service said it has faced challenges since it was founded in 1926 and “2020 ranks as one of the most difficult.”

“Closing our Kingston location was one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make,” said John D. McCarthy Jr., president of McCarthy Tire Service.

McCarthy said the Kingston store was the second in the company when his father opened it in 1979.

The Kingston store remains open through Oct. 2.

Manager Darryl Givens will join McCarthy Tire’s commercial location in Dickson City as the assistant manager. Assistant retail manager Herb Tietje and the automotive technicians will move to the Wilkes-Barre location’s retail department.

McCarthy Tire plans to transfer the tire and service equipment to Wilkes-Barre as well.

The Pierce Street property is now up for sale. The McCarthy Car Wash, located adjacent to the store, will remain open until further notice.

The automotive center in Wilkes-Barre handles tire sales and service, preventative maintenance service, mechanical repairs and state inspections for all makes and models of passenger vehicles.

These include cars, vans, CUVs, SUVs, and light trucks, with a special emphasis on fleet vehicles.

The facility at 340 Kidder St., Wilkes-Barre, also houses McCarthy Tire Service’s corporate offices as well as the commercial tire department, off-the-road and industrial tire department, heavy duty truck repair department, mounted wheel program, mobile units and regional distribution center.

McCarthy Tire Service recently sold its store at 119 Linden St., Scranton to Jack Williams Tire Company.
