PIERSON — A motorcycle rider was killed Wednesday afternoon in Pierson in a crash with a vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
A 23-year-old Leesburg man was traveling southbound on US-17 around 2:55 p.m. behind a pickup truck, according to the report. The motorcyclist failed to notice the truck slowing to make a left onto E. 4th Avenue.
The motorcyclist struck the left rear of the truck, which was being driven by a 62-year-old person from Leesburg, the FHP said, and then traveled into the northbound lanes into a head-on crash with another pickup truck, driven by a 70-year-old person from Seville.
Troopers dispatched to the crash found the street littered with pieces of the pickup and the motorcycle. The motorcycle rider’s helmet was lying at the side of the road.
The motorcyclist died later at the hospital, the report said. The truck drivers were uninjured. The Florida Highway Patrol does not release the identities of people involved in incidents.
The crash remains under investigation.
