The aging, nearly vacant Thruway Plaza shopping center would be replaced by a hotel and convenience store under plans before the Town of Clarkstown.
The proposal, dubbed Gateway Commons of Nanuet, would contain a five-story, 123-room Holiday Inn Express and a QuickChek with gas pumps.

While the 27,000-square-foot strip shopping center would be demolished, the Taco Bell/KFC structure would remain and a separate Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru would be added.
The plan eliminates truck parking, increases traffic controls and improves pedestrian access at the property’s entrance on the busy stretch of Route 59 near the New York State Thruway, according to a recent presentation made to the Planning Board. Drainage and landscaping upgrades are also envisioned.
Owners of the the 6.6-acre parcel, Thruway Plaza of Rockland Associates, appeared this month before the Planning Board in a meeting characterized as positive.
Town Planner Joe Simoes said the board is looking for some changes to improve traffic circulation The applicant will be incorporating the board’s suggestions before the next meeting.

The proposal still requires a host of planning, zoning and architectural approvals before it can move forward, but the owners are hoping to start construction in 2021.
The ownership is a partnership between the Goldstein, Yassky and Kirchner families, which each have other residential and commercial real estate properties throughout Rockland County.
The 55-year-old plaza was damaged in a March 24 fire that started in the Thruway Deli and spread to other vacant stores as well as the Dunkin’ Donuts. A bagel store, nail salon, insurance office and home improvement store are still open. The Off-Track Betting parlor recently closed.
