OPP lay over 6,000 charges during truck safety blitz

Waterloo Regional Police issued over 80 speeding related tickets and took six vehicles out of service

Police forces were kept busy during Operation Safe Driver last week.

The week-long campaign focused on commercial and non-commercial vehicle drivers who failed to share the road safely, with a focus on speeding.

Ontario Provincial Police say they laid over 6,000 charges on the roads and highways they patrol.

Speeding dominated the offence categories among non-commercial drivers, with over 3,600 speeding charges laid, to go along with 145 for commercial drivers.

OPP officers also took 19 commercial vehicles off the road during the campaign.

Meantime, most of the fines Waterloo Regional Police issued were speeding related, there were 88 in total.

Six commercial vehicles were also taken out of service.

Operation Safe Driver is held annually across Canada, the United States and Mexico.
