Overpass strike in B.C. brigs this year’s count to 13 infrastructure hits – Truck News

Another truck struck an overpass in B.C. on Highway 1 on May 21, once again resetting the province’s count of days without vehicle bridge or overpass crashes.

On a Tuesday afternoon, a truck from Abbotsford, B.C.-based M&H Transport Limited hit a 232 Street overpass, under a CPKC rail overpass on Highway 1 Westbound in Langley. The incident was cleared around 4 p.m. on the same day, DriveBC reported on X. As of now, there is no report on whether there was any damage to the overpass.

According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) website, the cause of this accident remains under investigation and the carrier is suspended.

This is the 13th infrastructure hit in the province since the beginning of 2024.

With the Tuesday incident under investigation, the other 12 were attributed to driver or carrier errors, with the most common ones being failures to measure loads, follow approved routes, as well as operating without a permit or failure to follow permit conditions.

Just two months ago, a Best Bin Rentals & Disposal truck hit the same CPKC rail overhead on Highway 1 due to failing to measure the load. The carrier was operating without a permit, too.

Earlier this month, CVSE reported that another rail overpass, crossing Haslam Creek and Spruston Road, was hit on May 6, south of Nanaimo. This was also due to the driver failing to measure the load, CVSE established. The carrier was suspended with a violation ticket issued, and the suspension was lifted ten days after the incident.

Overall, 35 crashes that have occurred in B.C. since late 2021 by over-height commercial vehicles. In response, the provincial government has introduced higher penalties for responsible drivers in March 2024. Drivers could face $100,000 in fines, 18 months in prison.
