LARGO — A boot stuck in a gas pedal caused a pickup to plunge into a pond at the Pinellas County Courthouse on Wednesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 64-year-old Largo man was driving a Ford pickup south in the parking lot of the courthouse at 14250 49th Street N about 2:30 p.m. when his boot became entangled with the gas pedal as he tried to enter a parking space, troopers said.

The truck accelerated, crossed over a curb, crashed into a fence surrounding a retention pond and vaulted into the murky water. The truck became fully submerged but the driver escaped with the help of Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office personnel.

The driver was not injured. The Highway Patrol no longer includes in its news releases the the names of people involved in traffic crashes. The agency cites Marsy’s Law, a constitutional amendment meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information that had long been available under Florida’s public records law.
