The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services has been asked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the birth of a premature baby in the cab of a semi-truck in Cocke County this week.
Newport Patrol Officer Lindsey McMillan said she responded to the Interstate 40, 435 exit on-ramp just before midnight on Tuesday to find the passenger in the truck had given birth.
Nashayla Jones of North Carolina told the officer her stomach had been hurting but she didn’t know she was pregnant.
Both mother and infant were taken by First Call EMS to the Newport Medical Center where personnel estimated gestation of the baby at 20 weeks.
