Free meals and face masks available at Highlands Family Center

Highlands Family Center, Tarentum, will distribute free precooked meals from Eat N Park and fabric facemasks from Hanes by appointment from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the center, 415 E. Fourth Ave.

Appointments are required. For an appointment, call the center at 724-224-9006. Call as soon as possible. Spots go quickly.


TryLife Center accepting donations

The TryLife Center in Lower Burrell is accepting donations of gently-used children’s clothing in sizes newborn through 4T, maternity clothes, highchairs, pack n’ plays, walkers and infant seats.

Other items needed include diapers, wipes and bottles. Items that cannot be accepted are toys, books, games, adult clothing, children’s clothing size 5T and larger, used cribs, used car seats and furniture.

Donations should be dropped off from noon to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the red donation door at the center, 1155 Wildlife Lodge Road. Any items left outside of these hours will be exposed to the weather.


Salvation Army offers free lunches

The Allegheny Valley Salvation Army and Community Center in Brackenridge offers free grab and go lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays in parking lot at the center, 917 Brackenridge Ave.


Knead Community Café to distribute grab and go dinners

Knead Community Café in New Kensington will hand out free grab-and-go dinners from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the café, 1011 Barnes St.

This week’s sponsor is Rametta Audiology and Hearing Aid Center. Those picking up meals are reminded to observe social distancing while they wait in line.

Friday and Saturday: Apollo will have cleanup days for borough residents who have paid up garbage bills from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the borough garage, First and Railroad streets. Materials that will not be accepted: electronics, tires, batteries, paint, hazardous materials, building materials and appliances.

Sept. 26: Apollo Area Historical Society will celebrate the group’s 50th anniversary at a dinner at 6 p.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 214 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and a catered dinner will be followed by a video presentation of highlights of the group’s first 50 years. Cost: $15. Friday: St. Vladimir Church, 1610 Kenneth Ave., is taking orders for its potato and kraut pierogi sale. Orders will be taken from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
