Especially if you’re a practical car buyer, there is possibly nothing better than a pickup truck. After all, some trucks are built to last a lifetime. At the same time, there are also pickup trucks that are capable of going quite fast. In fact, they’re fast enough to leave sports cars in the dust. And if you’re the type who looks for unique interior features, we’d have you know that some pickup trucks also come with the coolest gauge clusters.
As awesome as trucks are, however, some models can be disappointing. Here are some of the worst American trucks ever:
10 2000 Chevrolet Silverado
If you must know, as many as 2,152 complaints have been filed regarding the 2000 Silverado, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This particular truck has also been the subject of 14 investigations and 24 recalls.
One of the reasons for the recall is a faulty parking brake system where it doesn’t hold the truck, thereby making unintended movement possible. Some 2000 Silverado models are also said to be using a hydraulic pump driveshaft that may fracture. If this happens, the driver would experience a loss of power steering assist.
9 2001 Ford F-150
If you’re in the market for a used pickup truck, the 2001 F-150 is perhaps one of the models that you should avoid at all costs. For starters, it was the subject of 20 recalls, seven investigations, and a whopping 1,317 complaints.
One of the reasons for concern is the possibility of corrosion in the truck’s fuel tank strap. If that occurs, the fuel lines would separate from the tank, and in some cases, the tank may come into contact with the ground. Aside from this, another recall was made because its speed control deactivation switch may overheat.
8 2005-2006 Chevrolet Silverado
These particular year models may have been made with a power steering hose that was manufactured with an incorrect compound. Because of this, the hose can become susceptible to high-pressure failure. As a result, the hose may fracture when exposed to high hydraulic fluid pressures and temperatures.
This happens when you’re steering the truck or applying the brakes. When this happens, the vehicle might significantly run low on fluid. According to the manufacturer’s notice, “When sufficient fluid is lost, power assist for steering is no longer available and vehicle directional control will depend on manual steering efforts.”
7 2006 Ford Ranger And F-150
In certain units of these models, the trucks may have been released with a windshield wiper motor that has no grease on the output shaft gear. According to a copy of the owner notification letter, “After a period of continuous use on the high speed setting, lack of grease on the output shaft gear may cause the gear to distort and/or fracture during operation resulting in a loss of wiper function.”
With the wipers rendered inoperative, a driver may suffer from a significant loss of visibility when driving through inclement weather.
6 2007-2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
On these specified truck models, there is a possibility that the underhood fusible link would melt. As explained in a copy of the manufacturer’s notice, “The owner manual for vehicles with an auxiliary battery (TP2) does not specify a maximum amperage rating for the auxiliary battery feed to a trailer harness. An electrical overload of the auxiliary battery feed may cause the underhood fusible link to melt and open-circuit…”
It added, “If the fusible link melts due to an electrical overload, it may cause smoke or flames which will damage the electrical center cover…”
5 2011-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 And GMC Sierra 3500
Having dual fuel tanks may sound practical. However, when it’s got a faulty sensor, the truck can easily become a headache to own. This happens to be the case for the 2011 to 2015 models of both the Chevy Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500.
According to the filed safety recall report, the front tank’s fuel-level sensor may become stuck in the low-level position. Because of this, the rear tank may end up overfilling the front tank and cause it to expand. As the front tank expands, it can make contact with the moving drive shaft.
4 2013 Ram 3500
This hefty truck is apparently big on problems, as evidenced by its 16 recalls over the years. For starters, the truck’s tailgate may open without warning. According to the safety recall report, the tailgate may feature “a power lock actuator control assembly susceptible to failure.” This might lead to road accidents if the tailgate opens while the truck is running.
Aside from this, there is also a possibility that the truck is suffering from a steering knuckle that was machined and installed incorrectly. Because of this, the joint between the knuckle and steering drag link may become weak.
3 2015 GMC Sierra 2500
In this truck model, there may be seats that would not remain anchored in the car. The cause of the problem is a faulty machine that was identified by GM’s seat supplier, Lear. According to a copy of the defect notice, “Lear identified a laser weld machine at its sub-assembly supplier that produced insufficient welds on the seat frame track assembly.”
Moreover, the notice cautioned, “If the weld is incomplete and the assembly is exposed to a high load condition the hook may separate from the seat track, increasing the risk of occupant injury in a crash.”
2 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Both year models were subjected to recall due to an issue with the truck’s ignition lock actuator. In this case, the ignition lock actuator may suddenly bind. Should this happen, it would be difficult to operate the turning key. Even worse, the ignition could remain in the “Start” position.
According to a copy of the manufacturer’s notice, “If stuck in the “Start” position, the ignition may suddenly snap back into the “Accessory” position, causing a loss of engine, steering, and braking power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.”
1 2019 Ram 1500
Yes, this truck is relatively new but apparently, it’s been problematic from the beginning. So far, this particular truck has already been the subject of 19 recalls. One of the reasons for the recall is that the truck may be using “improperly machined steering column stub shafts,” according to NHTSA.
If these shafts break, it is possible for the steering wheel to detach from the column, making the truck inoperable. In addition, this truck may also have a gear within the transfer case that wasn’t installed properly, which causes the truck to get stuck in neutral.
