GRAND HAVEN, MI — A Spring Lake woman upset about a pizza shop’s mask request caused a stir inside the store before running over a police officer’s foot outside and then fleeing, police said.
Police said Tammy Rose North, 56, was charged with fleeing and eluding police, resisting and obstructing and disturbing the peace following the commotion Thursday, July 16, police said. She was arraigned Friday.
Grand Haven police said the trouble started when North apparently entered a Jet’s Pizza shop and, when asked to wear a mask, became upset. She allegedly approached a counter, stuck her hands underneath a plexiglass barrier and used her fingers to make an obscene gesture to employees while speaking obscenities, police said.
She allegedly kicked a patron who tried to intervene. Out in the parking lot, Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Officer Everardo Pedroza Jr. had just arrived to investigate.
North was getting into a truck when the officer ordered her to stop. She did not.
Instead, police said, she backed up the truck and it rolled over the officer’s foot. She then left the lot.
Pedroza and other officers then gave chase but terminated the pursuit at U.S. 31 and Sternberg Road. North later was arrested by Fruitport Township police.
The officer was treated at North Ottawa Community Hospital for a foot injury. He is expected to fully recover.
